The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto (Location: Kamogawa Nijo Ohashi Riverside, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto; General Manager: Carlos Talero) will host an event on Saturday, April 22, 2023, in support of Earth Day (International Mother Earth Day), designated by the United Nations as a day to consider the global environment. This event is part of “Community Footprint,” a series of ongoing social and environmental conservation activities conducted by The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company.Marking the first Earth Day event since the hotel opened in 2014, it will feature Associate Professor Misuzu Asari of Kyoto University Graduate School. Professor Asari, whose research focuses on environmental education, SDGs, and creating sustainable communities, is actively involved in environmental initiatives not only in Japan but worldwide. The talk event at The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto’s first-floor “The Lobby Lounge” will feature Associate Professor Misuzu Asari alongside Carlos Tarello, General Manager of the hotel, who shares a deep interest in environmental issues and the sustainable development of Kyoto society. They will engage in a lively exchange of views on the theme “Everyday Eco Actions: What We Can Do.”During the event, a fashion show will showcase suits made from kimonos that had been stored unused for long periods. Named “KYOTO SUITS,” these suits embody Kyoto’s unique spirit of environmental consciousness. They were created over approximately one year by Kenichiro Koyama, a spatial designer and fashion designer collaborating with Professor Asari’s laboratory and working to upcycle old Kariyushi wear from Okinawa Prefecture into commercial products. The models for the fashion show will be international students studying environmental science at the Asari Laboratory. Participants from welfare workshops in Kyoto City, who will handle tasks like kimono disassembly, will also attend the event.Inspired by Earth Day, we decided to hold this event in the hope that as many guests as possible will consider environmentally conscious initiatives and take concrete action. Please note that this event is open to non-staying guests as well.
